Random thoughts
So this Bigfoot story is a hoax, huh? Too bad. I think it would demonstrate how unaware we are of our own environment.

My mom's in town for a week. She's spoiling the kids, I tell ya! We'll be hitting West Edmonton mall today. Oh gee, wonder if the kids will find something for her to buy them there!

Been having real scorching hot days lately. It's not so bad because it's basically a dry heat, and it can make for quite the impressive thunder storms when a cold front moves in overnight. But hey, that's what summer weather's all about, right? Just wish we had a pool...

What are The Monkees up to?

Hey, all of a sudden Canada is winning medals in Beijing! 9 so far, including 2 golds. Not bad!

Thinking of buying a new computer. The one in the basement is 4 years old, getting kinda slow, and is frankly kinda wrecked. Should I get a laptop or should I just get another tower? Pros and cons, people: tell me what you think.

Haven't eaten a candy apple in years. Would it tear my teeth out if I bit into one now?

A few thoughts on the Olympics I really hadn't expected to be

A few thoughts on the Olympics

I really hadn't expected to be watching as much of the games as I have been, but seeing as how it's summer and there's precious little else on TV, I've gotten sucked into a number of events which usually wouldn't hold my attention. This has given me time to formulate a few opinions about the games, opinions I wanted to share.

The Chinese "women's" gymnastic team: Oh come on!! If these children are all 15 and older, I'll eat my hat! It just serves to remind me that the only ones who abide by the rules (Olympic code, Geneva convention, whatever) are the good guys. Yeah, I know Canada and America have had their share of cheaters but we denounce them when they're discovered. Really, are we still stuck in a 1950's Cold War frame of mind where we think Olympic medals prove our politics are better than others'? Just look at the Chinese men's gymnastics team, and then compare them to their women. Tell me if you think they're about the same age.

Michael Phelps: Oh man, can this guy swim! Sure, he ain't nuthin' special to look at (actually, he's rather unattractive, wouldn't you say?) but wow, what an athlete!

Women's beach volleyball: I missed the meeting...it's about attractive athletes in skimpy bikinis, right? So how come the men don't wear Speedos..?

Canada sucks at the summer games. It's sad but true. Other than at rowing, I mean. Just wait until the Vancouver winter games in 2 years. Oh yeah. Ice, snow, hockey, and Canadian beer. You're welcomed, world!

Men's gymnastics: the skills these guys have really don't translate into anything useful in real life. The high bar, the pommel horse, the rings...can't really use those skills, say, in an office, can you?

I coined a new phrase: "Yop, yos..."
I say it every time an athlete messes up his or her performance. It stands for "Years of practice, years of sacrifice", and it underscores the pathos of the moment. I feel bad for these athletes when they screw up after so much work but it goes to show how ultimately many of the things we pursue aren't worth a whole lot. Seriously, don't you feel bad for the runner or the swimmer who fail to medal by a couple of hundreths of a second?
"Yop, yos..."

Okay, this is an example I always use when discussing racism: who wants to bet me that there won't be a single white guy competing in the finals of the 100 meter dash? That isn't a racist comment by the way; it a racial one. What I'm saying is that blacks are generally superior to caucasians as athletes (signed, the men's basketball team). Oh, I know you can come up with examples where caucasians dominate (hockey, water polo, skiing, gymnastics, etc) but does anyone really doubt that if blacks wanted to dominate those sports, they couldn't?

Which reminds me of Chris Rock's reasons why black people don't play hockey:
First, it's cold out there! Second, we might get our gold teeth knocked out! Third, we have no desire to dominate another professional sport. And, finally, no brother is going to go anywhere there is a bunch of crazy white people wearin' masks and carryin' sticks!

Back to the couch...

The cult of victimhood The woman commissioned by the Democratic

The cult of victimhood
The woman commissioned by the Democratic Party to direct its presidential nominating convention in two weeks espouses the same black liberation theology pursued by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose church presumptive nominee Barack Obama was forced to leave because of its controversies.

Now a profile in the New York Times reveals Rev. Leah Daughtry, a Pentecostal minister who leads a congregation of 20 in Washington, embraces "black liberation theology" beliefs such as the "debt" the U.S. "owes" all blacks for slavery
.

If I was a black man in America today, I'd be embarrassed by these so-called leaders who keep bitching and moaning about how the country owes them a debt for something that happened centuries ago to my ancestors. I know whereof I speak. Being French Canadian, my ancestors were at times very badly treated by the English conquerors who took over New France and made no qualms about wanting to assimilate the remaining French population.

Oh boo hoo, poor me, my life would no doubt be SO MUCH BETTER today if some Englishman hadn't mistreated my ancestors 250 years ago. English Canada must be forced to pay for the misdeeds of their ancestors...because money will, huh...make all those perceived slights go away. I guess.

Listen up. Yeah, slavery is bad. Yeah, some English soldiers probably did some very nasty things to the French. But the truth of the matter is that most of us have no clue who are ancestors are, no clue what happened to them, and quite frankly most of us don't really care because it affects us EXACTLY NOT AT ALL on a daily basis. No black person living in the U.S. today was ever a slave. No one's parent's were ever slaves in America. No French Canadian nor his parents or grandparents were ever abused by English soldiers.

So this rush to be labeled "oppressed", by both African-Americans (most of whom have never been to Africa) and French Canadians (most of whom have never been to France) betrays more a lack of character and integrity than any true suffering. No one owes anyone a living so get over it. Life is hard for EVERYBODY regardless of your skin color or cultural background, and I deeply resent anyone demanding compensation for something they themselves never suffered, especially when they demand it of ME.

Seriously, are such people just stupid?

And the fact that this woman claims to be a minister of the gospel of Christ...
Do not even get me started.

More random thoughts... Had a real good time at Bulldog's this

More random thoughts...
Had a real good time at Bulldog's this past week. We basically parked our behinds in front of his huge plasma TV and watched man shows, played X-Box, and ate to our fill while enjoying cold beverages. Many cold beverages. That might not sound like an especially exciting time but it was just what the doctor ordered as far as I'm concerned. Thanks again, bro.

Said it before, I'll say it again: you just can't trust the Russians. What they're doing in Georgia right now is horrible. Thousands more will die, and the United Nations will sit on its hands while the principals "work out their differences". Oh, if only they could manage to piss off the Chinese...

Speaking of China, I've been watching the Olympics. As a Canadian, I must protest the lack of snow and ice. Seriously, pour a ton of ice in that pool, and see who wins the medals then.

Oh look, a politician got caught lying...and cheating on his wife. In other news, the sun came up this morning.

My chihuahua barks too much when people come to the door. I think he's convinced he's a rottweiler. Good thing he's so cute.

ROLLING STONE MAG SWITCHING TO SMALLER, RACK-FRIENDLY SIZE
Best headline of the day.

Preaching on eternal security this coming Sunday. Any thoughts?

Gee, the American president said his country would drill for more oil a few weeks ago, and the world price has been dropping ever since. Hmmm, now why would that be..?

Wendy's makes a burger called "the Baconator". It's better than you think. Try one.

*Random thoughts* Still don't understand all the raving about

Random thoughts
Still don't understand all the raving about The Dark Knight.

I'm puzzled by certain advice given in commercials. If I had an erection that lasted for more than 4 hours, shouldn't I call over my friends and brag, instead of seeing a doctor..?

T-2 days until I invade Bulldog's house. There will be poker, oh yes, there will be poker...

I think I'm becoming a grumpy old man. Gotta put a stop to that.

Promised myself I'd catch a football game with my son but I still haven't done it. That's too bad because the Eskimos are doing well this year.

Seriously, is Barbra Streisand that good a singer?

My mother-in-law is making rouladen for the entire clan today. time to put my gourmandise to good use.

How come today's celebrities aren't anywhere near as cool as Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin were? Or talented, for that matter? What would Elvis think of today's music?

Yes Eric, I'd like to borrow your copy of Band of Brothers. The HBO series what very good, I can only imagine the book is excellent.

I get the sense that a lot of people are growing wise to the sham of manmade global warming (or climate change). There just seems to be significantly less alarmism on the subject of late.

So how's the war on terror going? Or the war on drugs?

*Ah summer...* Now usually summer is a time for doing outdoor

Ah summer...
Now usually summer is a time for doing outdoor activities, taking trips with the family, and visiting friends and relatives. A lot of people do stuff like that during the summer. As it has turned out for us, most of our relatives have come to visit us this summer: family from Manitoba, Quebec, Pennsylvania, and my mother comes for a 10 day visit on the 15th. Phewff!

As a result, I find I've done next to nothing this summer. I've seen a number of movies, driven the kids to a couple of weeklong day camps, taken care of the regular household chores, but nothing quite summerish if you know what I mean. No beach, no road trip, no cotton candy at the fair. My one trip comes up next wednesday when I drop in on the Bulldog for 4 days, where I'm told there shall be some fishing to be had. All is not lost!

But it remains that summer is almost over for all intents and purposes. I start my last year at university in a month, after which I become a high school teacher. It's the culmination of much time and labor, and it feels good to be on this end of it. Still, it's somewhat sad to realize that a whole summer can pass by so quickly without my having done a whole lot. Guess that's what happens when you get old, huh?

So what did you do this summer?
